DIFFERENCES IN VOCATIONAL INTERESTS OF MEN IN SEVEN NAVY RATES.
Abstract
The availability to the military establishment of a convenient and reliable index of vocational interests would permit the selection of men for training of duty not only on the basis of their ability to learn, but also on the basis of the likelihood of their finding the work interesting and stimulating. Such a device would be especially useful in that its most valid application would probably be with those inexperienced new recruits who possess considerable ability to learn, but inadequate vocational experience on which to base a choice of field in which they would enjoy learning. The report summarizes work in the measurement of the interest patterns of men in seven Navy rates (yeomen, firecontrolmen, gunners mates, aviation ordnancemen, aviation metalsmiths, aviation machinists mates, and aviation electronics technicians). For each group a scoring key for the interest inventory was obtained by comparing the responses of men in the rate with those of civilian tradesmen-in-general. The efficacy of each key was then examined by scoring members and nonmembers of the rate on that key, and comparing the two distributions of scores. (Author)
