AN ANALYSIS OF A WATER JARS TEST,

Abstract

In connection with a factor-analytic study of mental flexibility in the domain of creative thinking, a search was made for various tests of the problem-solving type as possible measures of hypothesized factor of adaptive flexibility. The Luchins water jars test, or an adaptation of it, was selected for inclusion in the test battery to determine if the 'rigidity' supposedly measured by the test was related in a bipolar manner to the factor of adaptive flexibility and to discover whether or not the test might involve other factors found to be associated with the ability to solve problems.
