MINIMIZATION OF a-th POWERS USING CONVENTIONAL LEAST SQUARES ROUTINES,

Abstract

Adjustment problems are considered where the sum of a-th powers of deviations (with 1 = or <) is minimized. A technique is presented by which these problems can be solved numerically with the aid of such conventional least squares machine programs which are designed to treat general constraint functions. The technique consists of a proper formulation of the constraint function and minor manipulation of data. It requires, therefore, practically the same amount of programming as is needed for reqular use of the conventional programs. Examples for the application of the technique are presented. (Author)
