NEW ANTIMALARIAL AGENTS

Abstract

A series of substituted naphthyridines was prepared and the compounds were screened for their antimalarial activity. Among these compounds, BNAC 30552, the 1,6-naphthyridine, substituted in position four by -NHCH3CH(CH2) 2N(CH2CH3)2 was reported as active. In addition to these compounds a number of polyazaindenes were also prepared. Compound BNAC-29595, 1,8-dimethyl-imidazo (1,2-a)-pyridinium iodide, showed complete sporozoite suppression. Most of the N-methyl salts of the polyazaindenes tested showed a high percentage of toxic deaths in the mosquito tests. It is suggested that these compounds, because of their potential biodegradability, might replace some of the currently available non-biologically degradable chemicals, such as DDT, in the control of mosquitos.
