FEAR AROUSING SITUATIONS AND THE FEAR OF FAILURE INDIVIDUAL.

Abstract

University males in an introductory psychology class served as subjects in a study to determine the relationship between common-place fear situations and fear of failure (FF) motivation. A modified form of the thematic apperception test (TAT) was administered and scored to measure FF by means of the hostile press (HP) system. Those operationally defined as high and low in HP were given a fear survey schedule (GFSS). It was found that high HP Ss had higher overall GFSS scores (p<.06), higher scores on all but 6 of the 51 items - significantly so on 5 of the items (p<.05), and significantly higher scores on items central to the FF construct when considered as a group (p.<.05). Results were discussed in terms of the defensive strategy of the FF individual. (Author)
