EVALUATION OF A COMPACT TEST CHAMBER FOR IMPEDANCE AND POWER TESTING OF ANTENNA AS-1729/VRC.

Abstract

The report describes the evaluation and testing of a compact, fully enclosed chamber intended for electrical alignment and testing of VHF whip antennas during production. The chamber was specifically designed for alignment, VSWR testing, and r-f power testing of the AS-1729/VRC vehicular antenna which operates from 30 to 76 MHz and is part of the VRC-12 series of radio sets. Tests revealed that the antenna could be made to perform in the chamber in a manner similar to that on a 10 x 10 foot ground screen in free space. It was necessary to add some top loading to the antenna when installed in the chamber, thereby achieving the desired current distribution and impedance performance across the frequency range. Capability for base alignment was verified by testing a group of 30 production antennas aligned in the chamber. Suitability for power testing was also verified experimentally. A time study of the total time to align antennas in the chamber versus conventional r-f bridge alignment showed that appreciable cost savings was possible by using the chamber. (Author)
