NEW METHOD FOR PROCESSING RESULTS OBTAINED DURING EVALUATION OF ANTIWEAR PROPERTIES OF LUBRICATING MATERIALS ON A FOUR-BALL FRICTION MACHINE,

Abstract

Antiwear properties were determined with 1 indicator by use of the data obtained with the 4-ball test apparatus, indicating the difference between actual and ideal characteristics of the oil. In the ideal case, when the diameters of the wear mark of the balls are equal to that of the surface of elastic ball contacts, the wear curve follows a straight line on the Hertz plot of log ball mark diameter vs. log load. The ideal (antiwear) characteristics of the lubricant were determined by 2 surface areas delineated on the graph. Comparative results obtained by this method are tabulated. (Author)
