DETERMINATION OF THE EARTH'S GRAVITY POTENTIAL ON THE GEOID,

Abstract

The study of the Earth's figure (the geoid) on the basis of the Stokes theorem has been beset with difficulties due to the fact that to use this theorem it is necessary to postulate some hypothesis on the structure (density stratification) of the Earth's interior. In 1945 M.S. Molodenski put forward a new principle for study of the geoid, requiring no hypothesis on the Earth's internal structure. The 'geodetic gravimetry' approach originated in the research of N.K. Migal and in particular of I.A. Kazanski (1932), which in turn was based on the work of Vening Meinesz. The present paper is a continuation of previous work by Monin which is available in English translation. (Author)
