GENERATION OF SECOND HARMONIC LIGHT IN TRANSPARENT MEDIA.

Abstract

The purpose of this study and experimentation to produce a more efficient generator of optical harmonics. Generation of second harmonic light was studied using a pulsed ruby laser and various transparent materials. The electric field of the beam serves as a driving function and the binding potential of the electrons serves as a restoring agent. As the electric field passes through the transparent media, the electrons are displaced from normal positions. The binding potential resists this motion and the electrons take up oscillations that reflect the existence of both forces. The mathematics predicts a result involving optical harmonics which was verified in this project. Detectable amounts of second harmonic light generated in this manner require utmost attention to experimental details. Many conditions must be met in order to produce the effects of harmonic generation of light. A differential equation may be written to describe this oscillation of electrons using characteristics of the laser beam and the bombarded materials. (Author)
