THE PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF NEW HETEROPOLY TUNGSTATES.

Abstract

In 1965 the following unusual anion was prepared and characterized: (H2GaW11O40)(9-). This anion has been found to be very reactive toward transition metal ions. It has been utilized in the preparation of two new and very stable heteropoly anions which have the following formulations: (CuGaW11O40)(9-) (I); (MnGaW11O40)(9-) (II). Both the NH4-Na and the pure Na derivatives of these anions have been prepared and studied. The new compounds were analyzed for each constituent except oxygen. Other studies with these new compounds included x-ray diffraction and cryoscopy. The cubic, crystallographic cell of the NH4-Na derivative of anion (I) contains eight formula weights as required by its space group. The NH4-Na derivative of anion (II) crystallizes in the orthorhombic system. There are two formula weights in its crystallographic unit cell. Both anions (I) and (II) have the Keggin-type structure.
