THE ALIGNMENT AND PHOTOMETRIC CALIBRATION OF A STAR AND SKYLIGHT SIMULATOR.

Abstract

A star and skylight simulation facility, for the comprehensive testing of many aspects of star sensor performance under laboratory conditions, is described. The photometric calibration of the simulated stars relative to the known irradiance of real stars, and the theoretical basis of the calibration are discussed. A brief survey of stellar types is included to explain aspects of the simulation technique. The calibration of the skylight source in terms of a photometric standard is also described, and corrections made for its spectral distribution. The overall accuracy attained in the calibrations is estimated. (Author)
