GAS SOLID-STATE RECEIVER PROTECTOR AT S BAND.

Abstract

The report discusses the fundamental approaches considered in the design and development of a 2000 hour life, completely passive, S-band, gas-solid state receiver protector. Factors considered in the development of a passive receiver-protector are gas discharge firing characteristics, leakage spike energy variations resulting from statistical phenomena and development of an intrinsic low energy electron source. Experimental results are reported and it is shown that spike leakage less than .05 ergs and flat leakage less than 30 milliwatts can be readily achieved with the gas-solid state receiver protector. Low insertion loss and complete standby protection are also attractive features of this device. Finally, results of a 2000 hour life test at 100 kilowatts peak power, with intermittent operation at 3 megawatts peak power are reported. (Author)
