SPECIAL DISTORTION AND ENVIRONMENTAL TESTS CONDUCTED ON THE HUGHES MODEL 745H TWT.

Abstract

The report describes the results of a program to evaluate in detail the Hughes model 745H traveling-wave tube. The 745H TWT was developed for use in satellite communication systems and provides 1.3 kW's of power across the military band from 7.9 to 8.4 GHz. This tube utilizes the coupled-cavity slow-wave circuit which possesses a high interaction impedance to assure good efficiency over the operating band. In addition, it is mechanically and thermally rugged. Areas of investigation included a series of special distortion measurements on a government-furnished 745H. Subsequent and potentially more damaging environmental tests were performed on a new tube specifically fabricated for this program. In a continued effort to improve the performance of the 745H, a few small circuit changes were incorporated with a significant improvement in performance being realized. This new tube was subjected to the full requirements of MIL-E-16400 without failure. Extensive AM and FM noise measurements were made under vibration. Finally, the tube was operated at full output power for a limited life test of 500 hours under vibration. (Author)
