INVESTIGATION OF SOLIDIFICATION OF HIGH STRENGTH STEEL CASTINGS UNDER SIMULATED PRODUCTION CONDITIONS.

Abstract

The work was concerned primarily with determining (1) different methods of obtaining directional solidification in cast steel and (2) effect of solidification variables on structure, segregation, and properties of cast steel. Using a method of obtaining directional solidification with very steep thermal gradients, solidification was 'unidirectional'; columnar grains extended from the bottom nearly to the top of 9 in. and 15 in. ingots.
