GAS DISCHARGE ANALYSIS OF CO2 AND HCN LASERS.

Abstract

The electrical discharge properties of molecular lasers have not been investigated, probably due to their complexity and the difficulty of making reliable measurements in a gas discharge medium which is undergoing chemical changes. In this report, calculations have been made in which many of the kinetic properties of the ionized laser medium have been estimated. A review of some useful electrical discharge relationship is made and then the CO2, N2, He laser and the CH3CN to HCN laser are analyzed. Concepts such as electron density, molecular density, mobility, mean free paths of the electrons, average electron energy between collisions, and relaxation rates are discussed in terms of their relation to laser performance.
