THE CONTROL OF HEMOGLOBIN FUNCTION IN BLOOD STORED FOR TRANSFUSION PURPOSES.

Abstract

The influence of 2,3-DPG on the oxygen affinity of whole blood has been reviewed and recent findings presented and discussed as they relate to the control of hemoglobin function in stored blood. CPD is a better preservative than ACD for maintaining hemoglobin function during blood bank storage. Further, adenine and inosine can be used with CPD to allow a longer storage time and improved hemoglobin function for the recipient. (Author)
