COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ANTIMALARIAL AND OTHER DRUGS ON G6PD DEFICIENT RED CELLS.

Abstract

The effects of various dosages of DFD (Di-N-formyl-diaminophenyl sulfone) on normal and G6PD (Glucose-6 phosphate dehydrogenase) deficient red cells belonging to 25 Sardinian and Negro donors and transfused into 30 normal recipients were studied. (1) Single dosages of DFD, from 400 to 1200 mg, have definite hemolytic effects on G6PD deficient, not on normal red cells. (2) The destruction of the G6PD deficient red cells by DFD is dose related. (3) The borderline dosages are different if one deals with red cells belonging to G6PD deficient Sardinians or Negroes. (4) The G6PD deficient red cells belonging to Negroes are destroyed by single dosages of DFD around 800 mg. (6) Methemoglobinemia in normal recipients, receiving DFD increased only after the administration of single dosages of 1200 and 800 mg of the drug. (Author)
