REPORT OF LINAC OPERATION: 1 JANUARY-30 JUNE 70.

Abstract

The operation and use of the NRL 60-MeV Electron Linear Accelerator is described for the period 1 January - 30 June 1970. Progress on the research program is discussed, including 180 degrees electron scattering on H and He isotopes, photonuclear excitation studies of 11B and 13C, and neutron resonance spin determinations for isotopes. Installation of various interface electronics completes a computer data acquisition system, insofar as the neutron time-of-flight experiments are concerned, and preliminary data with the system has been taken. Total manned time for the period was 1955 hours, divided into 1320 hours for beam and set-up time (including 83 hours for outside users), 612 hours devoted to maintenance and improvements, and 23 hours lost to breakdowns, a record low that will be difficult to beat. References are included, as are brief descriptions of the use of the linac by other groups. (Author)
