PHYSIOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF THE ACED SUBMARINE ESCAPE SUIT-RAFT SYSTEM.

Abstract

Subjects equipped with the ACED submarine escape suit system and using a raft with inflatable floor and canopy tolerated exposures of approximately 8 hr in 29F water and 24 hr in 44F water temperature. The following items made up the suit assembly: Rhovyl underwear, USAF winter flying suit, QD-1 impermeable garment, Steinke Hood, nylon gloves, wool inserts and USN exposure mittens, 2 pairs of wool socks, and double-walled wet suit booties. In 29F water temperature, tissue damage in approximately 12 hr and death in >24 hr are predicted; in an environment of 44F water temperature using the same suit-raft system, tissue damage and death are projected well beyond 24 hr, on the basis of data observed in a one-man test.
