AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF FIRST-TERM REENLISTMENTS IN THE ARMY.

Abstract

The paper presents a theoretical and statistical analysis of first-term reenlistments in the Army. The statistical analysis provides estimates of the supply of first-term enlistments as a function of estimated earnings and the other factors. Primary conclusions are drawn on the reenlistment rate as influenced by variations in both estimated military and civilian earnings; a 10-percent change in the ratio of military to civilian pay may affect reenlistments by 20 to 30 percent. Reenlistment rates for whites are compared to those of blacks. (Author)
