THE DEGRADATION OF BISCARBORANE.

Abstract

Treatment of biscarborane, 1-(1'-1',2'-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane(12)) -1,2-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane(12), with alcoholic base initially leads to the selective removal of a single boron atom to give the 7-(1'-1',2'-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane(12))-7,8 -dicarba-nido-dodecahydroundecaborate (-1) ion and one mole-equivalent of H2. Further base degradation produces the dianion 7-(7'-7',8'-dicarba-nido-dodecahydroundecaborate)-7,8-dicarbanido -dodecahydroundecaborate(2-) and another mole-equivalent of H2. (Author)
