KINETICS OF AUTOXIDATION OF ATACTIC POLYPROPYLENE IN THE PRESENCE OF COBALT SALTS BY INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY

Abstract

The autoxidation of a film of atactic polypropylene (APP) in the presence of cobalt salts was studied quantitatively by means of infrared spectroscopy. Reactions were traced as a function of temperature, oxygen concentration and time. Temperatures varied from 100 to 130C and oxygen concentrations from 5 to 100% by volume. A general reaction scheme previously reported by the authors for the uncatalyzed autoxidation of atactic polypropylene was modified to account for the cobalt acetylacetonate-catalyzed autoxidation of APP in the bulk phase.
