RESEARCH PROGRAM FOR ALERTING, DETECTION AND IDENTIFICATION OF PATHOGENES.

Abstract

The objective of this program is to assess the possibility of rapidly detecting and identifying pathogens when present in small populations. Gas chromatography is the methodology used. A time course study of BHK-21, RK-13, HEp-2, and MEF tissue cultures infected with NDV gave no indication of characteristic products. BHK-21 and RK-13 tissue cultures infected with NDV, influenza, YFV, Sendai, Vaccinia, and Herpes simplex showed a depletion of peaks observed in the controls after a 36 hr incubation - the peak depletions were inadequate to identify the viruses. No distinction between the infected and control serum could be detected in mice infected with YFV, influenza, Herpes simplex, and LDV superinfected with YFV. Several methods of extracting the serum were investigated. Investigations with bacteria indicated that Brucella canis could be distinguished from other Brucella, products characteristic of bacteria causing bacteremia were observed in the serum of mice, and mixed bacterial infections were also detected in the serum of mice.
