THE ESTIMATION OF THE PROBABILITY OF EXTINCTION AND OTHER PARAMETERS ASSOCIATED WITH BRANCHING PROCESSES.

Abstract

Let X sub 1, X sub 2, ..., X sub n be independent, identically distributed random variables taking only nonnegative integer values. Let P sub k = Pr(X sub i = k), and denote by f(s) = Summation from k = 0 to k = infinity of ((p sub k)(s sup k)) the probability generating function of the distribution (p sub k). In this paper the author considers the problem of estimating various functionals of f(s) which occur in the study of branching processes, and are of interest in various inference problems concerning these processes.
