LASER EXCITED RESONANCE FLUORESCENCE OF MOLECULAR IODINE.

Abstract

The laser excited Ar(+) 5145 A and He-Ne 6328A fluorescence spectra of iodine vapor have been obtained. It was found that the Ar(+) 5145 A light excited primarily the 43-0 P(12) and 43-0 R(14) transitions, with approximately equal intensity. A small amount (about 3%) of fluorescence from an excited state connected with a v'=1 ground state having a high rotational level (J' > or = to 100) was also observed. The He-Ne laser excited primarily the 6-3 P(33) transition, along with a small amount of the 11-5 R(127) transition. The effects of collisional processes on the excited iodine molecules is quite marked, and accounts for the remaining features observed in the spectra. (Author)
