SURFACE TENSION AND DENSITY OF MOLTEN ALUMINA.

Abstract

An x-radiographic technique was used to obtain profiles of molten Al2O3 menisci and pendant drops sealed in molybdenum of tungsten capsules. The surface tension was found to be 574 dynes/cm from the pendant drop shape and 360 dynes/cm and 638 dynes/cm from the meniscus shape technique in molybdenum and tungsten capsules, respectively. The density was found to be 2.92 g/cu cm at the melting point. (Author)
