EMPIRICAL PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS FOR ASTRONOMICAL WATER HEIGHT.

Abstract

The hourly astronomical water height was calculated for Crescent City, California and San Francisco, California. Empirical probability distributions calculated from 369 day intervals of these data show characteristics similar to those of a beta distribution. The empir cal probability distribution derived for the tsunami of May 22, 1960 as recorded at Crescent City, California is sharply peaked and symmetric with respect to the mean. The computer programs for the calculations are described. (Author)
