SCHISTOSOMIASIS IN THAILAND, STUDIES ON THE INCIDENCE, EPIDEMIOLOGY, LIFE CYCLES, AND ITS CAUSING CERCARIAL DERMATITIS.

Abstract

Surveys on schistosomiasis cases in the villages along Mekong River in Thakhek district of Laos and in Nakorn-phanom and Ubol provinces of Northeast Thailand were made on 2,012 people; none had eggs of S. japonicum in the faeces. Khong Island in Southern Laos has been regarded as a new endemic area of S. japonicum infection. A preliminary survey of the population during early 1969 revealed an incidence of about 16.8%. Re-surveys of schistosomiasis of Chawang district of Nakornsrithamaraj province in South Thailand revealed no cases of S. japonicum infection in 374 pre-school and school children and 68 adults. Mice were found to acquire some resistance to S. mansoni infection after previous exposure to cercariae of S. spindale. Experiments have been designed to demonstrate that anti-snail antibody produced in the mammalian host might exert a depressant effect on the development and growth of schistosome worms in the host.
