THE ELREPHO IN THE PULP AND PAPER INDUSTRY,

Abstract

Since it was first introduced in 1952, the ZEISS Electric Reflectance Photometer ELREPHO has been extensively used in the pulp and paper industry. In the pulp factory the 'brightness' of a pulp is an important criterion of its suitability for making white paper. Experience has shown that the diffuse reflectance of the pulp in the blue range of the spectrum is a useful measure of this potential whiteness. It has been suggested that pulp should be examined more closely to establish its yellowness index. Thus the diffuse reflectance of the pulp was measured with the ELREPHO, using every filter, and the yellowness index calculated from the gradient and height of the reflectance curve. The interrelation between the parameters often determined with an ELREPHO in pulp and paper mills is illustrated graphically. (Author)
