MEASURING DYNAMIC PATTERNS OF DEVELOPMENT: THE CASE OF ASIA, 1949-1968

Abstract

The research reported is a first step toward the building of a general theory of development in Asia. There are three tasks involved in this attempt: The delineation of patterns of development; the determination of linkages between national characteristics and the behavior of nations over time; and the construction of an all-computer simulation model to experiment on the potential effects of controls. Data have been collected on 48 measures of national characteristics for 21 Asian countries over a twenty-year period, 1949- 1968. These data are factor analyzed to determine patterns of interrelationship between variables over both nations and years. Factor scores for a specific nation in each year have been calculated to plot the nation's changing position along four major dimensions of development: power capability, wealth, trade, and diplomatic transactions.
