RADIATION FROM SLOT ANTENNAS ON CONES COVERED BY A PLASMA SHEATH. VOLUME II. FINITE CONE AND HOMOGENEOUS PLASMA.

Abstract

For very thin plasma sheaths, where the plasma is highly conducting yet the attenuation in penetrating normally through it is small, the sheath produces only a small perturbation in the far field. This is in the order of 5 percent for fields of electric type but is much smaller for fields of magnetic type. For electric type fields, the sheath acts like a weak reactive sheet. A finite cone covered by a highly conducting plasma sheath behaves essentially like an infinite cone. This is due to the fact that the sheath substantially prevents the penetration of fields from the source location on the conical surface around to the back of the cone, so that no currents flow in the back, except for the immediate vicinity of the outer edge.
