INVESTIGATION OF ATMOSPHERIC PARAMETERS WITH FORWARD SCATTER PROBING.

Abstract

The report is concerned primarily with evaluating the potentiality of a high resolution forward scatter system to detect refractive index fluctuations caused by clear air turbulence. A justification for the use of the forward scattering approach to atmospheric probing is obtained by examination of available experimental results. Computer programs were developed to relate the spatial characteristics of refractive index and the link parameters (antenna pointing, beamwidths, etc.) to the multipath characteristics of the link. The program includes such effects as anisotropy, shadowing due to the radio horizon, and off-axis antenna pointing. A possible CAT measurement procedure is discussed which involves a narrow beam scanning antenna and a fixed wide beam antenna coupled with a measurement of channel delay power spectrum. Attention is given to the advantages of measuring the channel delay-Doppler scattering function. (Author)
