A PRINCIPLE GOVERNING DELETION IN ENGLISH SENTENTIAL COMPLEMENTATION.

Abstract

Essentially, the principle asserts that the noun phrase in the main sentence which must be identical to the initial noun phrase of the embedded sentence is that noun phrase which is least distance from the initial noun phrase of the embedded sentence (where distance is defined in terms of the number of phrase structure branches) providing that the noun phrase in the main sentence does not dominate the initial noun phrase of the embedded sentence.
