GLC DETERMINATION OF ACETATE CONTENT OF POLYMERIC MATERIALS.

Abstract

The physical and chemical characteristics of synthetic polymers are related to the type and ratio of functional groups distributed throughout the polymer. With polyvinyl chloride-acetate copolymers and cellulose esters, acetate comprises the major ester group commonly incorporated to impart certain desirable properties essential to the proper performance of fabricated products. Many organic coating systems are formulated from resins containing acetate groups. The report describes a GLC procedure for the determination of vinyl acetate in vinyl chloride-acetate copolymers and the acetyl content of cellulose resins. The procedure for the analysis of both types of material follows essentially the same course, namely, saponification and acidification of the polymer, followed by gas chromatography of the liberated acids.
