NOCTURNAL MAXIMUM WINDS IN THE PLANETARY BOUNDARY LAYER AT WSMR.

Abstract

Ninety-one cases of nocturnal low-level maximum wind are examined in detail and are classified into three basic types based on the major forcing function responsible for development. The time of most frequent occurrence is discussed, some of the factors which are conducive to development are listed, a technique for computing the magnitude of the low-level maximum wind is given, and typical synoptic surface and 850 mb patterns associated with each of the three types of low-level maximum are presented.
