JET NOISE SUPPRESSION BY AN IMPEDANCE SHROUD,

Abstract

Jet noise can be attenuated by shielding the observer from the noise sources with a sheet of fluid having a different acoustic impedance to the undisturbed atmosphere. The attenuation due to a heated sheet of gas lying on an arc centered on the axis of a subsonic jet was measured. The maximum noise reduction in certain frequency bands in this experiment was 10 dB.
