AN INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECT OF FLEXIBLE TRAILING WIRE ON A HYPERVELOCITY CONE,

Abstract

A program to investigate the effect of a flexible trailing wire on the aerodynamic characteristics of a cone at very high Mach numbers is described. The experimental program was conducted in a 1000-foot hyperballistics range. The development of the technique for launching a conical configuration which has a small-diameter flexible wire attached to its base is described in detail. The effect of this appendage on the drag coefficient and the stability of the cone is presented. Also, the radar cross section of a cone with and without the trailing wire is compared. (Author)
