A FAR-INFRARED MONOCHROMATOR.

Abstract

The report describes the rationale for the design and construction of a far infrared grating spectrometer of plasma emission investigations as well as studies of the emission and absorption spectra and characteristics of several materials. The spectrometer will cover the wavelength region between 50 micrometers and 2000 micrometers. Scalar diffraction theory is reviewed, and a discussion of the problems of optical aberrations, doubly diffracted radiation, and Wood anomalies is presented. Ray transfer matrices and phase space concepts are introduced as design tools. (Author)
