THE ABSORPTION SPECTRUM OF Gd(3+) IN CRYSTALS OF ALKALINE EARTH FLUORIDES - hextet D ENERGY LEVELS.

Abstract

The splitting of the hextet D(7/2) and hextet D(9/2) energy levels of Gd(3+) ions in CaF2, SrF2, and BaF2 hosts was measured through absorption experiments at 77K. For each host, crystals with several doping concentrations from 0.1 to 0.85 mole % were used so that line growth patterns could be studied. Comparisons with previously identified lines of the hextet P transitions were helpful in identifying the location of the charge compensating ion that produces the various crystal fields. The sites identified in the hextet D(7/2) spectra were the C(3v)(111) in BaF2 crystals, C(4v)(100) in SrF2, and both cubic and tetragonal in CaF2. (Author)
