A NOTE ON EXPLOSIONS IN FREON-C318,

Abstract

Hydrocode calculations have been made to determine some of the characteristics of explosions in Freon-C318 (Octafluorocyclobutane). These indicate that the explosion shock moves more slowly and carries a smaller overpressure in Freon than in air. At the same overpressure, however, dynamic pressure in Freon is larger than in air. Two 8-lb pentolite spheres have been fired in Freon, as a check on the calculations. The experimental observations from these shots are sparse but suggest that the calculations are adequate for rough estimates. (Author)
