STUDIES OF HIGH FREQUENCY WIND WAVES.

Abstract

The microstructure of the wind-disturbed water surface, characterized by surface-slope and surface-curvature distributions is studied with a newly-developed optical instrument. The measurements show systematically some features of these distributions under various wind conditions, and are correlated with the results of airflow boundary-layer surveys. Two regimes of equilibrium with different mechanisms for limiting wave growth are also discussed. In addition, with a turbulent wind, the present laboratory results exhibit variation of the mean square slope with the shear velocity similar to older oceanic data, suggesting possibility of the laboratory simulation of the microstructure of the air-sea interface.
