EVALUATION OF LARGE COMMERCIAL FLASHTUBES,

Abstract

The report examines the optical properties of commercially available helical coil flashtubes operated in first and fourth order fixed classical lenses. The old classical lenses which remain in service in lighthouses were originally designed for multiple wick oil burning light sources. These sources have been replaced by various improved electric incandescent lamps as they become available. Intensity, vertical beam profile and lens/lamp ratio have been measured for a 1000-watt tungsten-halogen incandescent lamp, and 3.2 K joule and 24 K joule helical coil flashtubes in first and fourth order lenses.
