METEOROLOGICAL ANALOG TEST AND EVALUATION. FIRST FIELD TEST OPERATION.

Abstract

Above and within a deciduous hardwood forest near Cambridge, Md., 115 diffusion trials were conducted. A quasi-instantaneous point source of fluorescent particle (FP) tracer material was released and sampled by a 400-meter grid of Rotorods at a height of 2 meters. Vertical arrays of Rotorods were also utilized. Meteorological instruments and magnetic tape recorders were used to record data such as wind speed, direction, and elevation during the trials. Also included is a stand description made by standard forestry techniques and aerial photos of forest canopy. Diffusion parameters included cloud width, cloud thickness, direction and speed of movement. Canopy characteristics were also considered. A method of crossing statistics provided information on closure, geometric shape, and roughness of canopy. The differences between cloud parameters measured before and after leaf fall are discussed. The Richardson Number provided best indication of stability. The data analysis is presented in numerous tables. The data were summarized and reduced to provide quantified, descriptive terms of the diffusing cloud, the meteorological regime, and the forest physical characteristics for later comparison with similar trials to be conducted in different forests.
