DIGITAL ADDRESS THIN DISPLAY TUBE.
Abstract
The report describes the progress to develop a 32 x 50 resolution element Digital Address thin display tube for a man-pack radar. The feasibility of the approach was studied, a preliminary design was completed, a study of possible area-cathode approaches was completed, fabrication of prototype area-cathodes was initiated, and testing of dynode designing initiated. Of over 20 cathode types studied, 3 were selected for further study and experimentation. All three of these were of the thermionic oxide-coated cathode type. A multifilament flood gun was considered to be the most practical. The other two cathodes selected for evaluation and test are: (1) an oxide-coated screen mesh, and (2) an electroformed filament matrix. To maximize the performance of the dynodes, new hole-geometries are being studied. Evaluation of these new geometries has just begun. The design of minimum-power driving electronics has also begun. Preliminary estimates indicate the design goal of 1 watt total power dissipation is achievable. (Author)
