METHOD OF OBTAINING OCTAFLUOROTOLUENE.

Abstract

Octafluorotoluene useful as intermediate in the production of pesticides, plastics, lubricants, etc. is produced by passing hexafluorobenzene in an inert gas stream through a quartz tube at 700-1200 degrees centigrade. In an example, 150 g. of hexafluorobenzene were passed through a quartz tube packed with quartz at 900-1000 degrees centigrade at a rate of 15-3 ml/hr. Fractionation of the 100-120 g of reaction product collected yielded 50-60 g. of the octafluorotoluene, m. pt. 103-104 degrees centigrade and 40-50 g. of the initial material. (Author)
