FRACTURE MECHANICS FOR DESIGN AND FAILURE ANALYSIS.

Abstract

The present paper is a brief review of how fracture mechanics can be applied to design and failure analysis with particular reference to peak performance structures. After a review of the foundations of fracture mechanics, a description of the testing procedures to obtain the material characteristics, which are to be used in the material selection, the design and failure analysis is given. Finally, a number of examples representative of how this new discipline of fracture mechanics can be applied to design and failure analysis and the general areas where an extension of the new discipline appears most desirable, are outlined.
