SOME RESULTS OF AN INVESTIGATION INTO THUNDERSTORM CHARGE GENERATION,

Abstract

The purpose of the report is to determine whether electrification in growing cumulus clouds precedes initiation of precipitation as detectable by radar. The mechanisms taking place in the early stages of a forming thundercloud have received little attention in the past by students of thunderstorms. There appears to be no evidence reported in the literature to support the widely held premise that rain causes thunderstorm electrification. This experiment then should provide one rigid criterion for judging the acceptability of theories proposed. (Author)
