A COMPARATIVE ASSESSMENT OF TWO FORMS OF CYCLOCONVERTER.

Abstract

The operation of two forms of cycloconverter, using natural and forced commutation, is described and analysed mathematically, with particular reference to equivalent circuit parameters, effective power factor and harmonic content. It has been claimed that the differences between these alternatives will have significant effects on the performance and engineering arrangement of variable speed constant frequency (VSCF) aircraft generating systems, and the analysis confirms that forced commutation has theoretical advantages which could result in simplified circuitry and reduced size of alternator. The results presented, which admittedly apply to ideal situations, will help in the assessment of the two systems and indicate further avenues of research. (Author)
