COMPOSITION OF THE EARTH'S UPPER MANTLE

Abstract

The report presents the results of studies of the nature and composition of the earth's upper mantle, using petrography, analytical, and synthetic techniques. The theoretical basis for these studies was established and subsequently high pressure liquids studies were carried out using the system CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2. This system was chosen to model a composition of the upper mantle because (1) it contains all the major minerals thought to exist in the upper mantle and about 90 percent of the composition of the mantle can be represented by this system, and (2) it contains the maximum number of components that can be handled geometrically with complete rigor and generality. Detailed accounts of the work are contained in the publications which were prepared during the course of the investigation.
