RESULTS OF TRAILING VORTEX STUDIES IN A TOWING TANK,

Abstract

Flow visualization studies were performed in a towing tank using an electrochemically activated dye. Although test Reynolds numbers were far below flight Reynolds numbers (10,000 vs 10,000,000), the results were strikingly similar to flight test data. Two types of instability were observed in the tank. An instability associated with the axial flow within the core was observed to destroy the flow in the neighborhood of the core without destroying the motion far from the core. A second instability involving the mutual interaction of the two vortices was observed but somewhat masked by the first instability. (Author)
